Te Wā o te Taiao; Energising local restoration efforts

Energised, inclusive and connected communities actively restoring and caring for te taiao in Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui. 

Get involved in local environmental restoration efforts.   Get involved in Te Wā o Te Taiao.  

Te Wā o te Taiao builds on the legacy of Restoration Day, and trials a refreshed approach to creating opportunities for communities to join with others. 

Get to know the natural environment in the area you live and meet local groups restoring wetlands, dunes, and rivers. Learn the stories of our places.

Edgewater Park Community Planting Day

Monday 15 September 2025  

10am – 3pm 

Edgewater Park, Fleetwood Grove, Waikanae 

Support Te Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai, Friends of Waikanae River, Parikawau Reserve Group and the Greater Wellington River Rangers to plant 1500 plants along Edgewater Park.   

Sixty students from two local kura (schools), Kapakapanui School and Waikanae School, will help to bring this vision to life. 

Community welcome! BBQ lunch provided for all volunteers.

AWE – Te Mauri o Wharemauku

Tuesday 16 September 2025 

Locations along the Wharemauku 

Teacher Professional Development event supported by Enviroschools. A collaboratively run seasonal workshop for kaiako (teachers) in the Kāpiti rohe. These workshops explore different places and states of mauri on the Wharemauku, weaving together the voices of the awa itself, with a team of haukainga, environmental educators and community. A unique place-based curriculum experience for educators at all levels. 

Promoted through Enviroschools, targeted participation with limited numbers. 

Waitohu Stream Dune Planting Day

Saturday 20 September 2025 

10am - 12.30pm 

Ōtaki 

Come down to the Waitohu Stream mouth to plant 1200 foredune plants to help grow and protect our dunes.  

Bring gloves, warm clothes, snacks and drinking water. 

Walking access from Marine Parade or Moana Street. (Follow the paths through the dunes to the stream and you’ll find the gazebos at “planting central”.)  Please don’t drive on the beach.
