Intention to change the collection and penalty dates for Greater Wellington Regional Council rates in the Carterton District only

Under section 119 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, Wellington Regional Council, at its meeting on 27 August 2024, determined that it is desirable to set the 2024/25 Wellington Regional Council rates again because there has been a relevant change in circumstances.

On 9 July 2024 Greater Wellington was informed that Carterton District Council was unsuccessful in adopting their 2024-34 Long Term Plan (LTP) and that they may not adopt it until 18 September 2024.

Carterton District Council collects the rates on behalf of Wellington Regional Council in its district; therefore, any changes to their ability to collect also impacts Wellington Regional Council.

Carterton District Council has opted for a three-instalment approach for the 2024/25 rates, shifting to a three instalment rates collection approach for 2024/25 year.  This will commence following the adoption of the LTP.

Consistent with Wellington Regional Council’s established practice of aligning collection and penalty dates with those set by the relevant territorial authority, Council intends to change the rates collection and penalty dates for the collection of regional rates in Carterton District to align with the collection and penalty dates set by Carterton District Council.

The dollar amount of rates set will remain unchanged. Council will be presented with a report to make a revised 2024/25 rates resolution at its meeting on 26 September 2024.
