Community invited to Waiohine River tour

  • Published Date 17 Jun 2016

This week members of the Waiohine River and Greytown communities discussed the proposed floodplain management plan with members of the Waiohine River Floodplain Management Planning Advisory Committee and Greater Wellington Regional Council Flood Protection Engineers at a public drop in day at the Greytown Public Library.

"We had a range of questions from interested parties, most people want to talk through the implications for their properties in particular and learn more about the existing man-made modifications.  Some people had suggestions about recreational opportunities such as a cycle ways that might be incorporated in the plan," said James Flanagan.  "We had some detailed discussions with both new property owners and long-time residents - some recalled first-hand devastation following large flood events."

GWRC has distributed printed information across the community, is meeting with several groups, running public drop in days as well as a free field trip.  All documents and a feedback option are available on the council website.

"It is really important to us that householders, land and property owners, retailers and families that have an interest in the area give us their view on a plan to protect them from problems caused by river flooding and erosion.  It is equally important for us to hear if community members are supportive of the draft proposals and we would really appreciate people giving us this feedback- the online form can take only a minute or two to complete and printed forms are available at the Greytown library and council offices. "

A free field trip to several sites along the river is planned for Sunday 3 July, departing from Greytown Public Library at 9am and returning for light refreshments at 2pm.   Bookings are essential and can be made by emailing bookings@gw.govt.nz or calling Rachel Chapman 04 830 4041.

There are two further public drop-in days at the Greytown Public Library, 2:00pm - 7:30pm: Sunday 3 July and Wednesday 6 July.  Learn more and give your feedback by Friday 15 July: www.gw.govt.nz/waiohine-river
