Experience the rugged beauty of Baring Head/Ōrua-pouanui on this guided walk on the remote coast of Raukawa Moana.
On this guided walk, you’ll discover Ōrua-pouanui/Baring Head on the remote coast of Raukawa Moana/Cook Strait. You'll walk alongside regenerating native bush, WW2 remnants, and unique windswept ecosystems. The route offers panoramic views Te Whanganui a Tara/Wellington harbour.
Experienced guides from the local community will bring you to the heritage-listed lighthouse complex and share stories of the history of this important maritime facility. You’ll also visit NIWA’s Atmospheric Research Station, normally closed to the public. The recently restored former lightkeeper’s cottages now open for accommodation booking will also be open to view!
Please note:
- Ōrua-pouanui/Baring Head is very exposed and weather can change quickly, so come prepared.
- Bring sturdy walking shoes, a packed lunch, water, sunscreen and sun hat, and warm and weatherproof layers.
- This walk is approximately three hours with some steep sections and requires a good level of fitness. It is not suitable for kids under 13.
