We protect our vulnerable native species by controlling pests in 50,000 hectares at key sites across the region. This video was made with support from the Remutaka Conservation Trust, and features birdsong courtesy of the Department of Conservation.
Key sites
We are protecting 50,000 hectares at key sites across the region, called Key Native Ecosystems. We do this so our native plants and animals can thrive there.
Planting
In 2023 we planted almost 1 million trees across the region. Planting helps to conserve soil, improve water quality and remove greenhouse gases.
Pest control
Pest plants can smother native plants, dry out wetlands and rivers, reduce habitats for native animals, and grow rapidly in waterways. We’re continually removing dangerous pest plants across the region before they get established. This year we responded to over 1,000 public enquiries and requests for advice and help on how to remove pest plants and pest animals.
Wetlands
There are only around 3 percent of wetlands remaining in the Wellington Region. We’re working with landowners to protect and restore our wetlands. We’re part of the Wairarapa Moana Wetlands team. By controlling pests and carrying out planting we’re helping protect this taonga (treasure), which has some of the most unique ecology in New Zealand.
