The 460 kilometres of coastline in the Wellington region supports a high number of indigenous bird species, many of which are ranked as either Nationally Threatened or At Risk under the New Zealand Threat Classification System. Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is one of several agencies that have statutory responsibilities relating to the sustainable management of the natural values of the Wellington region coastline, including its indigenous bird values.
