Petroleum Transportation Hazards in the Wellington Region

The objective of this study is to determine the nature and
spatial distribution of the hazards associated with the
transport of petroleum products in the Region. The
study included consideration of petroleum transportation
by road, rail, sea and pipelines in the Wellington Region.
The study comprised a review of relevant literature,
collection of data from petroleum companies and other
agencies, and an assessment of the accident potential,
likelihood of spill and the regional variation of the
hazards associated with petroleum transport. Specific
areas of risk, such as road tunnels, road-rail crossings,
urban areas and water supply lakes, are also highlighted.
Measures to manage the risks arising from petroleum
transportation are discussed in the report.
