Supplying Wellington with water has never been easy. Although the
Region has abundant sources, the development of public supplies has
been constrained by distance and mountainous terrain. Earthquakes and
floods have occasionally damaged supply structures. Rapid population
growth since the early days of water supply development has led to
demand often stretching, and occasionally exceeding the available
resources.
