Living in such a beautiful and risk-prone area means we need systems and organisations to help us prepare. That’s where the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office or WREMO comes in.

What is WREMO?

WREMO is the group that coordinates Civil Defence and emergency management services on behalf of Greater Wellington and the eight other councils in the region. WREMO was established in 2012. Greater Wellington funds 33% of WREMO’s work.

WREMO recognises that in a major disaster, we need to be able to support each other in our own communities. A core aspect of WREMO’s work  focuses on helping communities realise their capacity to  play a lead role in responding to and recovering from natural and man-made emergencies.

WREMO also supplies essential information on how individuals, families and organisations can get better prepared for a disaster.

Community Emergency Hubs

Community Emergency Hubs, like the one featured in our video at Te Horo, are pre-identified places for the community to coordinate their efforts to help each other during and after a disaster. They are opened by people like you in your community, not official staff, when there is need for the community to help itself.

WREMO works with communities to identify strengths and resources that could be useful during a disaster, as well as identifying vulnerabilities and helping to outline potential solutions to the challenges a community could face during a disaster.

Community Emergency Hubs are about being prepared and coming together in a time of need, but they are also about forming relationships in your community and knowing your neighbours.
