The Pakuratahi forest provides a large range of walking and tramping tracks that provide opportunities to people of all different skill and fitness levels. On offer is the chance to see numerous native plants at various altitude levels as well being able to enjoy the historical Remutaka Rail Trail which connects the Wellington and Wairarapa regions. The different walking areas include:
The Mt Climie ridge provides the southern and eastern backdrop (and windbreak) to Upper Hutt. It is also part of the long northern skyline of the Remutaka Range seen across the harbour from Wellington City.
Running from Kaitoke to Summit, the Remutaka Rail Trail links with the DOC-managed Incline down to Cross Creek in the Wairarapa. A gently graded 18 km walk or mountain bike ride, the Trail features restored railway bridges and historic tunnels (take a torch).
The Te Ara Tirohanga (formerly the Remutaka Trig Track) starts near the summit of the Remutaka Hill Road (555m) and climbs to the northern crest of the Remutaka Range (725m). The track zig-zags its way up the exposed slope, where native trees and shrubs have slowly returned.
Nestled at the foot of Mount Climie (830 m) north of Upper Hutt, Tunnel Gully Recreation Area is popular for picnics, mountain biking and walking through the remnant native bush. There is plenty of parking, and flush toilets are provided.
