Local Governance Statement

Updated 16 March 2020 10:36am

Following each triennial local government election all local authorities, including Greater Wellington Regional Council, are required to prepare a Local Governance Statement. The Local Governance Statement is a collection of information about the processes which Greater Wellington Regional Council engages with residents of the Wellington Region, how the Council makes decisions and how citizens can influence these processes. This Statement is for the 2019-2022 triennium.

The Local Governance Statement supports the purpose of local government by promoting local democracy.

It is a requirement made under section 40 of the Local Government Act 2002 and includes the following broad categories of information:

  • Functions, responsibilities, and activities of the Council
  • Governance structures and processes
  • Electoral arrangements
  • The way elected members make decision and how they relate to each other.
  • Management structure and key policies of the Council
