Staying safe

  • The weather in this area is notoriously changeable. Cold wet winds chill very quickly so carry warm waterproof clothing even if the weather is fine. Take high energy snacks with you, drinking water, topo50 BP32 – Paraparaumu and compass and a first aid kit
  • This is a remote wilderness area. Mobile phone coverage and connectivity is poor. Take a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) with you
  • See Metservice for the latest weather forecast
  • Always advise someone of your intended route and when to expect you back

If you spot a fire:

  • attempt to extinguish it
  • notify authorities promptly, by calling 111
