Getting there and staying safe

Private vehicle

Parangarahu Lakes Area: Burdan's Gate, at the end of Muritai Road, Eastbourne. Vehicles are not permitted south of Burdan's Gate. You can rent bikes from Burdan's Gate Bike Shed at the end of Muritai Road.

Baring Head/Ōrua-pouanui: You can reach Baring Head/Ōrua-pouanui via Coast Road, Wainuiomata. The park entrance is a 15 minute drive from Wainuiomata. For more information on Baring Head/Ōrua-pouanui, including a brochure with a map, click here.

Eastbourne: Korohiwa Road (Bus Barn), Kowhai Street, Muritai Road and MacKenzie Road.

Days Bay: Williams Park and Ferry Road.

York Bay: Kaitawa Road.

Lowry Bay: Cheviot Road and Dillon Street.

Pt Howard: Howard Road and Ngaumatau Road.

Wainuiomata Hill Road: Near the lookout. Approach the carpark via Wainuiomata

Wainuiomata: Lees Grove, Fraser Street, Gardiner Grove and Stanley Street.

If travelling by private vehicle: Some of these streets are narrow, with restricted parking. Please consider local residents and do not block entranceways.

By public transport

Eastbourne: Take the No. 81 or 83 bus along Marine Parade and Muritai Road (Mon-Sun) or No.'s 82, 84 or 85 (Mon-Fri). The Dominion Post ferry runs between Queens Wharf and Days Bay (Mon-Sun).

Wainuiomata: Take bus No. 170 from Waterloo Interchange (Mon-Sun). Park entrances are near Main Road, Wainuiomata.

Staying safe

The park has moderately steep bush covered hills and is exposed in places. The weather can be changeable and extreme on the southern coast, so please:

• Check the weather forecast before your trip
• Carry warm and waterproof clothing and enough food and drink for your trip
• Plan your route and tell someone your intentions
• Wear strong lace-up footwear
• Note that some sections of the tracks are moderately steep and slippery when wet
• Avoid streams during heavy rain
