Active Travel Action
The Active Travel Action curriculum resource has been developed by Greater Wellington Regional Council and Enviroschools - Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui.
The resource provides a process for schools to implement sustainable active travel practices in their school through student inquiry - and an opportunity for students to take action in response to climate change.

Active Travel Action Curriculum Resource - Full
The introduction provides an overview of how to use the resource as well as Te Ao Maori perspectives and curriculum links.
This booklet is for students to reflect on what they are thinking and learning about after each activity. It is a key tool for helping to develop intentions and action.
Section 1: Active Travel - Connecting In - He Waka Eke Noa
This section focuses the students’ thinking into the topic of active travel. Students gain an understanding that there are many benefits in engaging in active travel - personally, for their community and the planet.
Section 2: Understanding Citizenship - Making a Difference - Kaitiakitanga
This section explores what it means to be a citizen and what it looks like to make a difference. Students gain an understanding of the concepts of Mauri, Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga.
Section 3: Understanding the Issues - Locally and Globally - Whakamaramatanga nga Take
This section exposes students to the issue of rapid climate change. Students investigate what other motivations affect the choices we make.
Section 4: Measuring Where, How and Effects of our Travel Choices - Tataihia etahi Haerenga
Students measure how their community is travelling to school. The students look at factors such as safety, walkability, carbon emissions and whanau influence.
Section 5: Exploring the Changes we could Make - the Actions we could Take - Kotahitanga
This section supports students to choose what changes they would like to make. Students investigate which actions will help them to make those changes.
Section 6: Taking Active Travel Action - Whakatinanatanga
This section provides the tools for taking action. Students develop action plans that will help them to implement a change in their own travel behaviours or a change that encourages others to choose active travel. Students celebrate with their community to reinforce their learning and continue to develop awareness for Active Travel Action.
Help us improve Active Travel Action by completing an evaluation after you have implemented the resource. Taking part involves completing this 10 minute survey followed by a 10 minute follow-up phone call. The first 30 teachers to complete this will each receive a $30 Fishpond voucher as a thank you from Greater Wellington Regional Council.
