Swimming

Updated 9 November 2021 1:34pm

Residents and visitors to the Hutt Valley enjoy cooling off in the Hutt River during the warmer months. There are several good swimming holes:

  • just north of Fraser Park off Taita Drive
  • south of the Silverstream Bridges near the old willow nursery (this site is susceptible to toxic algae during summer - see information below)
  • where the Hutt and Whakatikei rivers meet
  • where the Hutt and Akatarawa Rivers meet

Never swim alone and always check the river for submerged rocks or logs.

Toxic algae can be present in the Hutt River during summer. Check out our toxic algae pages for current river warnings and background information including photos.
